RSS Feeds and the Guidance Counselor

Posted at 10:55 pm under Uncategorized

RSS feeds are awesome in the way they bring in new information on Web 2.0 blogs without me having to search throughout the web for updates on my favorite sites.  I feel that as a guidance counselor, I need to be updated on what is out there to help students stay caught up on technology innovations that can improve their education as well as give them ideas for possible career choices.  Many of my students already have their own blogs, but had not tried to link up to each other using the RSS feeds.  Their time is just as precious as mine and this tool can help they communicate quicker with each other as well as the outside world.  Knowledge of what they are doing and how they are doing it gives me opportunities to reinforce internet safety and netiquette.  Subscribing to their blogs through my Google Reader also helps me keep up with them and gives me something to talk to them about when I need to built rapport with them to help with a problem.

If we are going to use blogs effectively with our students, we would definitely want to use RSS feeds to be able to keep current. By reading your students blogs, it would give you common ground to begin a counseling relationship as well as alert you to any problems that need to be addressed.
