Flickr in the Guidance Office

Flickr photos can be used as great discussion starters in the guidance office.  Students in small groups can find and share photos: showing how they are feeling, demonstrating goals they have, or activities they want to do.  Flickr photos can also be used to illustrate topics in PowerPoint presentations for parents, staff, or students.

Another great site that can help when working with photos is imageshack.us .  I downloaded my Leadership image onto my computer and converted it on this system to a URL so I could add it to this blog.  Images can be easily resized on this site to make them easier to upload on the web or for email.

RSS Feeds and the Guidance Counselor

RSS feeds are awesome in the way they bring in new information on Web 2.0 blogs without me having to search throughout the web for updates on my favorite sites.  I feel that as a guidance counselor, I need to be updated on what is out there to help students stay caught up on technology innovations that can improve their education as well as give them ideas for possible career choices.  Many of my students already have their own blogs, but had not tried to link up to each other using the RSS feeds.  Their time is just as precious as mine and this tool can help they communicate quicker with each other as well as the outside world.  Knowledge of what they are doing and how they are doing it gives me opportunities to reinforce internet safety and netiquette.  Subscribing to their blogs through my Google Reader also helps me keep up with them and gives me something to talk to them about when I need to built rapport with them to help with a problem.
